Behind the scenes with the Producer

Watch our case study video about The Big Lift!

Client Goals

  • Halifax Harbour Bridges needed to manage public frustration around The Big Lift — a multi-year project that required repeated closures of a major city bridge.
  • The public didn’t fully understand the project scope, leading to confusion, anger, and a public relations headache.
  • The client wanted to shift public perception — from frustration to understanding, and ideally, to civic pride.
  • They saw storytelling as a way to educate, engage, earn buy-in and public trust in the community.

wow, goosebumps!

I've had some videos that I've been happy with when I've worked with other companies, but they're just..."meh, they're okay." Whereas working with Journeyman, everything's just, "wow, wow, goosebumps, I just can't wait to show that, I can't wait to share it!"

    Technical plan made simple

    Halifax Harbour Bridges

The Big Lift was an incredible engineering feat. We got incredible footage during the project to show what was going on. This technical animation simplifies the project and we hear the lead engineer narrate the video.

Initial Ideas

  • create video content that explained the engineering process and showed construction progress.
  • client wanted to build a personal connection between the public and the project.
  • go beyond facts — to bring in human stories that could change how people felt about the bridge

Opportunities

  • The whole client team was amazing at connecting us to people behind the scenes.
  • Filming required careful planning around night work, bad weather, and safety constraints.
  • the client uncovered never-seen-befofe archival footage from the original bridge build in the 1950s.
  • At first, there was hesitancy about whether people would engage with longer-form city communications content — but the client was open to trying something different.

Insights

  • At the outset, the public saw this bridge renovation as purely a pain in the ass news story about inconvenience.
  • A bridge is more than steel and concrete, and it didn’t get there by magic. As we went along, there were many potential stories to tell.
  • Our approach was inspired by a documentary film we saw about Mostar Bridge in Bosnia - a film that showed people’s emotional connection to a bridge destroyed by war. That film gave the bridge history and character.
  • A bridge is the thing that connects the city and connection if fundamentally a human story.

Campaign Delivery

  • We created two dozen videos of various styles and formats:
    • Short updates to explain the project and show progress
    • Emotional, character-driven stories from workers and citizens
    • A full 20 minute documentary
    • We used archival footage, night shoots, personal interviews, and documentary-style visuals to create a cinematic feel
  • Much of the content reached about 30% of the city organically on social media
  • Emotional storytelling helped transform a complex infrastructure project into a shared experience.
  • Most importantly, they helped shift the public mood — people transformed from haters into lovers of the bridge
