So, you want to launch a video project

Are these barriers slowing you down?

We understand the world you work in

Hi, I'm Mathew Welsh

I started Journeyman in 2008 after a decade in documentary film and television. I saw the power of real human stories and how often organizations missed that in their video storytelling.

If you work for the government and need to communicate a story, I can appreciate how tough the job can be. Whether you're explaining policy, training teams, or launching a public program, we know you’re working under real constraints:

  • Competing priorities
  • Tight timelines
  • Layers of approvals
  • Public scrutiny on tax dollars

You likely don’t have time for vague proposals or flashy ideas that won’t fly in your department. We’ve spent the last 15+ years helping project managers navigate the realities of public service work, and guide them toward the benefits of human storytelling.

Let’s put video storytelling to work for you.

What do you get when you hire Journeyman?

  • innovative and brilliant

If you have a serious goal and a need for a strong narrative, there is no better company to partner with. I can't wait for our next project. Mathew and his team take care of everything and instill the confidence that the final project will exceed expectations. Every. Single. Time.

    —Wendy Walters
Director of Medical Affairs, Nova Scotia Health

Journeyman vision

To build prosperity and understanding through the art of video storytelling.

We envision a world where video storytelling breaks down barriers, fosters understanding, and rebuilds trust.

If you scrolled this far, you’re probably looking for more than a corporate video with slow motion beauty shots, drone videography and wallpaper music that any production company can provide.

Clients come to us with communications challenges that aren’t always easy to tackle. That’s okay. We help find the story, write it, plan it, film it, animate it — and make sure the tone fits. Not too slick. Just honest and human.

Journeyman is a Halifax-based full service video production company, working across Canada and beyond since 2008. From the get-go, we aimed to be the best at storytelling that can elevate everyday people and everyday subjects and build content worth watching. Our roots are in the documentary film and TV world where founder Mathew Welsh spent a decade producing work recognized at the Geminis, Hot Docs, and other world festivals. Now, we bring a filmmaker’s eye and a craftsman’s mindset to every project.

That could mean communications and PR for a challenging topic, a business video to build reputation, or community engagement that makes people feel understood. When your audience can relate to the folks in your video storytelling, they’re more likely to listen and trust what you’re saying.

Real Stories. Thoughtfully Told.

Here’s how that looks for clients:

  • At Shell USA, one team needed to help front-line workers understand a big shift in how they worked. It was a potentially dry subject that could make people tune out. Instead we delivered a story people across the company actually watched and shared, with some saying it was "like something I'd see on Netflix."
  • At Ontario’s IESO, the challenge is helping people see energy not as a fixed cost, but as an opportunity. We created a huge variety of everyday people stories that revealed simple and complex ways to save — from turning off lights to rethinking operations.
  • Nova Scotia Health needs to recruit doctors. We told one doctor’s story — a true journey in decision making with ups and downs. It helped Nova Scotia's UK recruitment campaign differentiate itself from other predictable regional promotion content that seems "too good to be true."
  • For LNG Canada, we created over a hundred videos to support communication with communities, investors, and government during a multi-year project. The videos helped a very complex project get to the $40B "final investment decision" start line.

Communications folks tell us they value a process that feels thoughtful and collaborative. They need to justify every dollar invested. We help deliver extra value by re-cutting and formatting content into a YouTube video, Facebook video or Instagram video. Today those are standard tools in public relations and community engagement.

If your team’s a bit camera-shy? We’ll make sure they feel comfortable. If your subject matter’s complex? We’ll help simplify it without dumbing it down. If your audience is tough to reach? We’ll help find the story and format that makes sense.

We're a video production company with lots of experience across Canada — Halifax, Nova Scotia, Toronto, Ontario, Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta and Vancouver BC. We’ve filmed our clients' stories everywhere from remote Indigenous communities to big-city boardrooms, and worked internationally in places like Singapore, Gambia, and the UK.

We're very comfortable with video production in Natural Resources, Renewable Energy & Efficiency, Healthcare & Life Science, Government Communications, non-profits, military, ocean economy, and regional promotion. We’re used to navigating complex projects, multiple points of view, and high expectations.

Whether you need a new promo video, an updated business video or training video, or a full video ad campaign with different versions and formats, we’ll help you plan it so the final pieces work hard for you — online, at events, on social channels, or wherever they need to show up.

Why “Journeyman”?

A journeyman trades-person is someone who knows the craft and shows up to do honest, skilled work. That’s the spirit behind our name.

And what's a journey? Good video storytelling should take the audience on a journey to a new place, different from where they started. Tapping into timeless story structure is our specialty.

If you're looking for video storytelling that feels right and does its job — book a meeting and we'll get it started.
